Discussing Pixel Circuits for Hybrid Sensor and Display Pixel Arrays

A hybrid sensor and display pixel and its operating scheme are proposed. The circuit consists of two main parts: 1) the light sensor and 2) the integrated display onto the backplane. Hybrid a-Si:H/Nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si) TFTs were used as a hybrid phototransistor incorporating both sensing and switching on the same device. The display backplane design was implemented using a driving TFT and and an organic light-emitting diode. The grey scale of the pixel is generated by pulse-height and width voltage modulation created by the integrated a-Si:H sensor. The circuit has a wide operating range of 300pA to 2μA for TFTs having channel lengths of 10μm. A 7.5nA step for each grey scale is obtained when the circuit is implemented in a 256 RGB level imaging system within conventional pixel matrices. The refresh rate of the pixel can reach up to 200Hz.
